  1. World Elephant Day is annually observed on 12 August across the globe to raise awareness about the pressing challenges faced by elephants and advocating for their protection and conservation. 
  2. IRS officer Sanjay Kumar Agarwal has taken charge as the Chairman of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) by succeeding Vivek Johri.  
  3. On 2 August 2023, Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon announced his retirement from football.
  4. Cambodia’s King appointed Hun Sen’s son the country’s new leader on 7 August, 2023.
  5. Savita, who entered in 2023 World Cadet Wrestling Championships as the defending champion, won the only gold medal for India at Istanbul in the women’s 61kg weight division.
  6. The Indian Army has recently inducted a new addition to its arsenal, the ‘Swathi Mountain’, a lighter and more compact version of the indigenous Weapon Locating Radar (WLR-M).
  7.   10. In an effort to prevent dog attacks on children and the public, the Uttar Pradesh Government aims to establish Animal Birth Control Centers (ABC) in all municipal corporations and 58 district headquarters of Uttar Pradesh in a phased manner.
  11. The World Health Organization South-East Asia Region announced that Bhutan and Timor-Leste have successfully eliminated Rubella.
  12. India has finished 2023 World Cadet Wrestling Championships with a total of 11 medals, including 1 Gold, 7 Silver and 3 Bronze medals and finished at sixth in medal table.
  13. Kolkata-based warshipmaker Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd and MSME entity AEPL has launched a first of its kind in the country autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) named ‘Neerakshi’ which is designed to detect mines. ‘Neerakshi’ meaning ‘Eyes in the Water’ and is expected to undergo user trials by the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, and Army before a commercial launch.
  14. On 1 August 2023, Indian Poet diplomat Abhay Kumar (Abhay K), Deputy Director General of Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR), launched his new book ‘Monsoon: A Poem of Love and Longing’ at Kathika Cultural Centre in Old Delhi.
  15. Asia’s highest altitude (3600m) land art exhibition exploring climate, culture and community titled ‘Sā Ladakh’ unveiled in Leh.
  16. Renowned Malayalam director and screenwriter Siddique Ismail passed away on 8 August 2023, at the age of 63.
